Tidal Energy

Malachy Walsh and Partners is currently acting as civil engineering design consultants for a leading energy consortium for the feasibility of developing a hydro electric tidal lagoon in the Severn Estuary.

The key parameters of the scheme are:

  • 80 km impounded area
  • Tidal range up to 14m, average9m
  • Installed generating capacity 1500 to1700MW
  • 30 to 34 no.50MW8.5m diameter bulb turbines
  • 25km impounding wall in variable ground conditions
  • 3km long turbine housing and ancillaries structure
  • Approximately 40 no. sets of sluice gates

The scheme presents substantial engineering and environmental challenges in a difficult and sensitive marine environment. A multi-disciplinary team has addressed these issues and developed a schemethat is cost effective, innovative and presents minimal environmental impact.
