Basrah Sports City, Iraq
Malachy Walsh and Partners formed part of a group of consultants employed by the Ministry of Youth and Sport Iraq under the banner of AMBS/BWS The role of AMBS/BWS was to take on the task of verifying the design and construction of a new Sports City for Iraq as employers repersentive. The Sports City is located to the South of Basrah City. The Development is to be carried out in two phases. The first phase will include the 65,000 seater stadium, and a 10,000 seater secondary stadium. Both stadiums include an athletics track. In addition there are four training fields with covered stands, eight five storey accommodation blocks to house athlethes, a Fire Station/Civil Defense building, an indoor spa with gymnasium and swimming pool a medical centre and a VIP building. In addition there is car parking for 10,000 cars, a power plant, water treatment and sewage treatment plants to cater specifically for the development.
Phase 2 will include a Velodrome, indoor Olympic class swimming and diving pools, facilities to cater for all Olympic sports events, hotels and shopping arcades.
The value of Phase 1 is in the order of $500 m.
Malachy Walsh and partners role in the team is to carry out the Geotechnical, Civil, Structural and Municipal verification of all below ground works, and to carry out verification of all buildings above ground with the exception of the Main and Secondary Stadiums. In addition to the above Malachy Walsh and Partners are responsible for Verifying all Mechanical and Electrical design. The work involves liaising with the designers who are based in the United States, Jordan and Egypt, using predominantly American Standards. Malachy Walsh and Partners attended meetings in Jordan, on site in Basrah and supervised construction on site also.
