Project Description
The site is located on the Great Blasket Island, Dunquin, Co Kerry. This is a culturally and environmentally sensitive location. The contracts involved consolidation and conservation work carried out to specified ruins in the historic village. The intent was to conserve the wall structures as they currently exist and to minimise their vulnerability to ongoing dilapidation due to the aggressive environmental conditions and exposure to significant numbers of visitors. The fact that the works have to be accessed across the Blasket Sound is the significant driver in the contract programme.
The work envisaged minimal intervention to the wall structure of the houses in the Historic Village. Typically local repointing was carried out using a mortar based on local gravel and lime. At some locations, lintol replacement was required at defective window heads. Minor wall rebuilding also required at discreet locations.
In 2015 Repairs were carried out to the damaged slipway.
A further contract was completed in 2016/2017. This involved a full restoration of Tomás Ó Criomhthain’s house and the provision of Guide facilities in one of the other houses in the historic village. All of the work carried out required Planning Permission and was sensitive to the historic construction techniques used on the Island.
