Project Description
St. Angela’s College, Cork City – Malachy Walsh and Partners provided civil and structural engineering plus temporary works design for the contractor on this new build secondary school project on an enclosed and very steep city centre site. The project included the retention and conservation of 4 separate listed buildings. The proximity of adjacent properties and the brief requirement to excavate up to 6m into hard sandstone rock required that specialist excavation, temporary works and monitoring techniques were developed for the project.
The project required the design of large retaining walls, six storey high new buildings and substantial conservation works on this Public Works Contract project. Sustainability informed many design choices such as the use of GGBS cement, layout design of structural supports to maximise natural daylight and the design of large flues within the structural form of the building to assist with natural ventilation.
