On Tuesday the 29th of January, MWP Engineers Brian Sayers, Seán Doyle and Cormac Murphy gave a presentation on Wind Farm Design and Construction to the Cork Region of Engineers Ireland. They demonstrated Malachy Walsh and Partners’ involvement in wind farms across four different continents over the last fifteen years and their extensive experience of the many different and complex aspects of civil, structural, geotechnical and environmental engineering required for the delivery of wind farm projects. The presentation included details of the various challenges encountered during the design and construction stages including the effects of fatigue and cyclical loading, issues with water ingress to the concrete bases, the effects of hydro demolition of concrete, the translation of wind energy into extremely large base design bending moments, providing safe road access and working platforms for construction vehicles and the challenges of working in peat up to eight metres in depth.
