Project Description

Malachy Walsh and Partners provided civil and structural engineering services on this new build project for the HSE on a greenfield site.  The building comprised a circular plan residential building wrapping around a rectangular administration block on this steeply sloped site. Security of staff and patients was integrated into the design by ensuring that dead ends were kept to a minimum and by use of personal escape doors and personal alarms. Sustainable elements of the design included a dedicated grey water system which drains to a collection tank which was installed in the basement and pressure fed from here to supply cistern tanks etc. The basement was not included in the original brief but was suggested by MWP as an additional benefit taking account of the site levels and foundation requirements which required the southern section of the ground floor to be suspended due to low site levels. Also included were solar panels, 230mm thick roof insulation and a wood pellet boiler and storage system.
