Project Description

150 Bed Maternity Hospital (16,900 m2 floor area) consisting of a six-storey building with wards, operating theatres, neo-natal and high dependency units and roof-top academic unit over basement car park adjacent to existing ward blocks. The third level academic unit includes lecture rooms and laboratories and the first purpose-built integrated research and clinical centre in human reproduction in Ireland. The academic unit was developed for University College Cork. The structure consists of an insitu concrete flat slab and frame with no downstands to allow free routing of services under the floor.

Key issues on the project included design of a new basement alongside the existing ward blocks, assessment of the methodology of rock excavation, protection of the existing hospital from noise, dust and vibrations and design of superstructure.
