Project Description

Doolin Marine Development: Preliminary Design, EIA, Oral Hearing, Detailed Design

Malachy Walsh and Partners undertook an options study relating to the development of a pier at Doolin.  The preferred option consisted of a new pier to the south of the existing pier. The new pier was to be protected by a concrete armour unit revetment. Following selection of the preferred option further detailed studies were undertaken to provide background documentation to planning and foreshore lease applications. These included:the preliminary design of the preferred option, the preparation of an Environmental impact Statement, and a Natura Impact Statement.  A considerable concern existed in relation to the potential impact of the development of surf waves in the vicinity of the proposed development.  In order to allay these concerns considerable modelling of wave conditions was undertaken to enable an assessment to be undertaken in relation to impacts on these waves.

The development included dredging of an approach channel in rock, a concrete armour unit revetment, a concrete pier structure, and an approach road.

As part of the planning approval process an Oral Hearing was held by An Bord Pleanalla in relation to the works.  Subsequently planning approval was granted for the works.

The above services were provided to Clare County Council.
